BRTA teams excel in their first Daphne Fancutt Shield appearance

Congratulations to the ten BRTA Players that made history by representing BRTA in the Daphne Fancutt Shield played 18 & 19th January, 2020 at Doveton Tennis Club.

BRTA was honoured to accept the generous offer from Waverley Tennis to enter a team in this long-running, annual inter-Associations event.  The event honours Daphne Fancutt  – one of Australia’s tennis greats,  having been runner-up in the 1956 Wimbledon Ladies Doubles Championship.  Her three sons also played at Wimbledon, making the Fancutt family the only one in history in which each member made it to the prestigious tournament.

Son Charlie now coaches, and the next generation of family members is also determined to add to the family’s trophy cabinet.  BRTA replaced the Fancutt Academy team that usually travels from Brisbane for the event.

The BRTA team did the Association proud showing great camaraderie and teamwork in a strong competition and achieved some exceptional results.  Although we did not win the shield on this occasion our spirit and behaviour was exceptional.  Everybody enjoyed a great weekend of tennis and went home happy with their performance.

Special Congratulations go to Charlotte McIntosh who received a special award as the stand out player of the BRTA team.

BRTA would also like to thank those clubs that nominated players – representative tennis is a very memorable part of a junior players tennis journey where life long friendships are formed.  We encourage all clubs to give their members and players the opportunity to join appropriate representative teams.  Whenever nominations are called for representative teams clubs and/or coaches are advised and a news item is posted on the website.
