AJL 2020

AJL 2020: Nominations Now Open

With the Covid-19 lockdown, all junior BRTA and MDJTA players will have been ‘chomping at the bit’ to get back to competitive tennis.

Both Associations are planning to resume normal local competition in line with regular season dates as soon as government and sports authorities determine it is safe to do so.

Tennis Victoria has advised Associations to prepare for the AJL (Associations Junior League – formerly Junior Pennant) season with team selection as usual.  We invite all interested juniors to nominate by following this link.

The AJL season is scheduled to commence on Sunday 16th August and generally runs for 10 weeks with no play over school holidays or the Melbourne Cup weekend.  The Grand final is usually the last weekend in November.

Traditionally matches are played on Sunday Mornings – however, Tennis Victoria is considering some flexibility to include Sunday afternoon matches to avoid other Tennis calendar clashes – more information will follow.

AJL brings together competitive players from across metropolitan Melbourne and Geelong in an age-specific format that includes a best of two sets singles and first to 8 games doubles.  Teams consist of four players.

There is more travel than local competition and matches are played on neutral courts donated by our clubs.  Each team will have a volunteer Team Manager appointed.  As a general rule, all players that nominate will have the opportunity to join a team.  Team selection is consisted an important step on the Junior Development pathway.  Traditionally it requires some fairly good team and club management if a child is to try and play both local BRTA Sunday junior competition and AJL over the same season.

This is an underage competition.  The age is of 31st December, 2020.

  • 10 & Under (Mixed teams – but can also be all boys and all girls)
  • 12 & Under (Boys and Girls)
  • 14 & Under (Boys & Girls)
  • 16 & Under (Boys & Girls)
  • 18 & Under (Mixed – 2 Boys and 2 Girls – this group has not competed for the last few seasons – but Tennis Victoria is ever hopeful)

Nominations must be received by Friday 19th June, 2020.

The cost of season 2020 is $70.00 per player which includes:

  • Team T-Shirt (optional; if you already have one – team fee is reduced to $55.00)
  • Eight new balls for each match
  • Team Entry fees
  • Pre-Season Team get together and training session with qualified coaches.
