Under sunny skies eight of Bayside’s leading junior tennis players have had a successful 2019 Frank Sedgman Cup campaign. The Frank Sedgman Cup is an Annual Teams event that brings together the best 11 & Under junior tennis players in the state.
This year’s event was held in Traralgon with a team representing Bayside Regional Tennis Association and another Moorabbin & Districts Junior Tennis Association. In the lead up to the event both teams trained with 10 time grand slam champion Cara Black and local coach Marvin Barker.
BRTA had a tough first up match in their round robin pool after a late entry forced a change in the fixture. A strong NESTJA (North Eastern Junior Tennis Association) were too experienced for the BRTA team who were a bit nervous going into their first Associations Carnival. NESTJA would eventually go on to loose in the Grand Final to North Suburban Junior Tennis Association. BRTA bounced back with commanding wins over Goulburn, Wimmera and Central Highlands to finish second in their pool sending them to the 5th-8th place playoffs. A close victory over Peninsula followed by a loss to Eastern Region rounded out a successful campaign for BRTA finishing 6th in the 17 team competition.
The BRTA team displayed spirit, tenacity and great camaraderie throughout the even and are to be congratulated on a job well done.
